The two-minute moment your brand plan has to win
Nearly 90% of field conversations end inside two minutes. The three conditions a field call has to meet for prescribing to change.
Nearly 90% of field conversations end inside two minutes. The three conditions a field call has to meet for prescribing to change.
The rep has ninety seconds. The physician is standing, half in the corridor, holding a chart and already thinking about the next patient. This is where a year of brand planning arrives. Nearly 90% of these conversations end inside two minutes.
At Bionical Solutions, we believe this is the critical last mile of brand strategy. Everything the brand has built has to become a treatment decision for one patient. Hearing the message is the first step. Behavior change begins when that knowledge becomes motivation and belief, and when the circumstances are in place for the HCP to act on it.
Most pharmaceutical organizations invest heavily in evidence and in the messages that carry it. Both are necessary. Clinical evidence establishes why a treatment may matter. The conversation is where an HCP connects that evidence to the patient in front of them, inside their own clinical and operational context. That is why two HCPs can hear the same message and leave with different intentions.
Behavior science offers a useful lens on why some HCPs shift their behavior and others do not. The model comes from BJ Fogg at the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, and it describes how any behavior changes, from flossing, to choosing a cola, to how an HCP prescribes. It starts from a simple observation - people do not change for one of two reasons: either they do not want to, or they cannot. Fogg writes it as B=MAP. A behavior happens when motivation, ability and a prompt come together, in that order. Motivation is seeing a reason to change. Ability is whether the change feels achievable in their situation. A prompt is a clear next step they can act on. The order matters, because a prompt only works once motivation and ability are both in place.
Each of the three conditions can be prepared; the tools the field uses should perform four jobs: surface the concern, raise the necessity, make the next step easy, and keep the ask alive after the door closes. But designing the call is only half of it - the experience has to work for the field as well. If the content feels disconnected from the conversation, or the tool adds friction to an already pressured interaction, it will not be used consistently. Behavior change in the field has two users: the HCP whose next action the tool is built to change, and the field who carries the experience into the room.
Great field teams already bring expertise, judgment and trusted relationships to every interaction. The opportunity is to make those strengths more consistent and scalable. That is where technology, behavioral science and human-centered design work together. Technology amplifies the human interaction; it draws the HCP into the conversation and extends the engagement.
At Bionical Solutions, that is our work. We help field teams create more meaningful human-to-human interactions, embed behavior-change principles into those experiences, and generate insight into HCP attitudes and perceptions that makes every conversation more effective than the last.
Across our programs the average call runs 5.5 minutes, against a cited industry benchmark of 2.0 minutes. Field utilization on our most widely deployed platform runs at 95%. One ophthalmology launch returned a 6:1 ROI. When the right conversation changes what happens next, it can change a life for the better, faster.
Healthcare and technology keep changing, but treatment decisions are still made in the context of human-to-human interaction. Bring us your brand and the number that has to move, and we will come back with how we would work the last mile for it.
